Akira Fukushima

Akira Fukushima graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts as the top-performing student, receiving the Ataka Prize, the Acanthus Music Award, and the Mitsubishi Estate Award. He subsequently studied in Switzerland as a Swiss Government Excellence Scholar and completed his Master’s degree in Recorder at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

During his studies, he developed a strong interest in historical improvisation. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Historical Improvisation at the same institution, where he became the second recorder player in the world—and the first from Japan— to enroll in the program.

Together with harpsichordist Taichi Karakawa, he presents the concert series “Baroque no Omomuki.” He also performs as a recorder player with Bach Collegium Japan, appearing in concerts, recordings, and television productions at major venues including Suntory Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Alongside his career as a performer, Fukushima also studies and practices recorder making. He currently provides his instruments primarily to players in Switzerland, where they have been highly regarded.

He has studied recorder with Shigeharu Yamaoka, Akimasa Mukae, and Andreas Böhlen, and historical improvisation with Dirk Börner and Sven Schwannberger.
